Timber Kitchen

Here is a recently completed family kitchen that I enjoyed working on earlier this year. At our initial meeting, my client stated that she was not after a white kitchen with minimal lines for her villa home - she said this was not her or character of the house. She later explained what she was after was 'Rock'n'Roll Nana' - a great description, right? She is an artist who wanted a kitchen that looked great, wasn't too precious for her creative family and to have her collection of teacups and objects on display.
This is the result - a dark stained timber kitchen with touches of white and vintage style cabinet handles. In contrast we used unstained timber for the two display shelves to highlight the collections. The bench top is stainless steel around the working area and the island is completed with a white high pressure laminate. It was great to visit the kitchen today and see the 'life' that it possesses.

New Work - Residential Furnishings

Here I am finally getting around to taking some photos of recent work! This residence has been an on-going collaboration with Minty Architecture and Design, ie. my architect sister. We have worked with these clients over several years through different design and building stages - it has been great seeing how this home has progressed. Earlier this year, I worked with the clients on their furnishings for the dining and living areas - here are the results.

Modernist Beach Home

We have been having lovely, sunny and calm Wellington weather at the start of our winter season, so it doesn't feel so bad to share this modernist beach home from Sydney, rather than a cosy cabin today. It's no surprise that this home is so stylish as it is the home of interior stylist and buyer, Karen Kelly Tarasin and her family - and it has made the cover of the latest Inside Out magazine. I like the warmth of the timber, vintage Danish furniture and shots of blue throughout. Read more here.

Trestle Tables

I am working on an office fit-out at present and I have been researching for useful furniture options. I found these great trestle tables from Auckland based, The Trestle Union  - as a possible option to create extra table surfaces.
During a trip to Mexico, Trestle Union were inspired by the market merchants who transported themselves from location to location while displaying their wares on simply made trestle tables.
I like the Union Ply which includes a pair of marine ply trestle legs (there's a choice of rope colour) along with a table top made of poplar plywood which is double sided with white high pressure laminate. They look smart and will be super handy.

Jardan Tuck Table

Tuck coffee table

I recently ordered this great Tuck coffee table from Jardan for a client of mine - take a look at the cool leather shelf below. We are getting this piece with a timber top, however it is also available with a marble top.
Jardan is a family owned furniture business in Melbourne, Australia. They pride themselves on hand crafted pieces that are solid and designed to last. I have admired their pieces from afar for a while and it is exciting to be getting one. The Jardan team have been great to deal with - very helpful with getting it delivered to New Zealand. So if you've ever had your eye on something...

Visting Christchurch

Timber storage

Last week I flew to Christchurch to visit a timber furniture manufacturer. I am working on an interior job where we are getting several pieces of custom made furniture - so along with the project manager, we visited Davies Furniture to finalise details and check out their facility. It was great!
We had lunch at C1 Espresso where they deliver sliders to your table via a pneumatic tube at 100km/hr. We ordered a meal especially to see this in action - very clever indeed.

This is what a timber manufacture factory looks like.

Mark Tuckey Egg Cup Stool

Here is the latest piece of furniture that I just love - it is called the  Mark Tuckey egg cup stool. I had my eye on this piece last year as it popped up in various interiors I had admired.
It's a gorgeous simple form which can be used as a stool or a side table. I saw it again this morning and I still really like it! A good sign that it is meant to be - so onto the wish list it goes. Now just got to figure out a way to get one from Melbourne to my home in Wellington...

Scandi Style Kitchen

Here is a great Scandinavian style kitchen that has been designed for a Swedish-American family in Brooklyn, New York. I like how the dividers create the spaces without having to build walls - it keeps the overall interior spacious and creates a flow throughout. Read more about it here.

Stainless steel bench top with exposed plywood edge.

This freestanding unit houses the fridge and kitchen storage. It also acts as a dividing wall between spaces.

The divider becomes a bookshelf on the other side towards the living room.

Another built in divider, which houses the coat cupboard, defines the entrance and the living spaces.
